General & Preventive
At Barounis Dental, we offer the latest dental technologies to help keep your smile looking it’s very best! Our experienced team provides quality general and preventative services for you and your family.
General Dentistry
Our general dentists are our primary providers of dental care for patients of all ages. They focus on preventative care and identifying potential oral health problems at bi-annual oral health visits.
Preventative Dentistry
We practice preventative dental care every time you visit and receive dental care at Barounis Dental. The foundation of this care is our recommended bi-annual oral health visits. When you come in for oral health visits, we give your teeth a thorough cleaning and examine your teeth and mouth for signs of any potential oral health problems.
As needed, we take digital x-rays of your whole mouth so that we can closely monitor your oral health from visit to visit. If you need further dental treatment, our team of caring professionals work with you to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
Hygiene & Fluoride
Maintaining Healthy Teeth
The most important thing you can do at home to keep your teeth and gums looking and feeling their best is to maintain a regular and thorough home oral hygiene routine. This routine should include brushing for at least two minutes twice a day and flossing regularly.
Other tips for healthy teeth:
- Brush twice a day and after eating with a fluoride toothpaste
- Floss at least once a day, preferably before brushing
- Do not rinse your mouth after brushing
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash
- Eat a healthy diet that is low in sugar
We recommend bi-annual oral health visits with our dentists to maintain optimal dental health. For patients with certain oral health conditions, we may advise that you come in more frequently.
Fluoride Treatments
Our dentists primarily give regular fluoride treatments to children and teens to strengthen the enamel on their developing teeth. We may recommend adult fluoride treatments if we see indications that you are at increased risk for tooth decay. Some symptoms of this increased risk are dry mouth, gum disease, and frequent cavities.
Are Fluoride Treatments Safe?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is regularly ingested through food and beverages in tiny quantities. When administered by our dental team, in-office fluoride treatments are a safe and integral part of preventive dental maintenance.
If you have questions about whether fluoride treatments are right for you, talk to your dentist at Barounis Dental about potential risks and benefits.
Digital X-Rays
We use modern digital x-ray technology to capture images of your teeth and mouth. This new x-ray technology reduces exposure to radiation by up to 80%, making them safer for our patients than traditional x-rays.
To take digital x-rays, our hygienist or dentist will place an electronic sensor in your mouth to take the x-rays. This electronic sensor is connected to a computer and transmits the x-ray image to a computer for viewing and storing.
The Benefits of Digital X-Rays
Digital x-rays produce higher quality images than traditional x-rays. We can expand and reduce the images for more accurate viewing and diagnosis. With digital x-rays, the images are stored as a file on a computer, making it easy to archive or send the images to other dental specialists.
Oral Cancer Screening
At Barounis Dental, we perform oral cancer screenings at every regular oral health visit. These screenings include a comprehensive inspection of the mouth by our dentists for signs and symptoms of oral cancer. Oral cancer screenings are important at any age but should be more frequent if you smoke or are in a high-risk category for oral cancer.
Some of the symptoms that our dentists may look for are unusually colored patches anywhere in the mouth or lips, lumps, sores, suddenly loose teeth or dentures, swelling of the lymph nodes or salivary glands, and changes in the neck and jaw.
Reporting any unusual changes in your mouth to our team helps us to catch potential problems early. These unusual changes include sores that don’t heal, numbness or pain in any area of the mouth or throat, slurring, and even earaches. Early detection of oral cancer is a vital factor in better treatment outcomes.
Sedation Dentistry
If you or your child are nervous or overly anxious about having dental work performed, Barounis Dental offers sedation dentistry using nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is a gas that has been used in dentistry for decades to lightly sedate and soothe patients who may experience dental anxiety.
Sometimes called conscious sedation, nitrous oxide sedation is administered by placing a small mask over your nose. This mask is connected to tubes which deliver a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide, which is both colorless and odorless.
The effects of nitrous oxide are nearly immediate and short-lived once the mask has been removed. Patients can usually leave our office right after their appointments.
We want all of our patients, both young and not-so-young, to feel they are in safe hands when they visit our dentists. With sedation dentistry, you don’t have to let your dental anxiety prevent you from maintaining the health of your smile.
Restorations, Crowns & Bridges
Tooth-Colored Restorations
At Barounis Dental, we can offer our patients tooth-colored restorations, which are white resin composite fillings used to fill cavities and repair or reshape teeth. We prefer tooth-colored restorations over traditional fillings because of the amazing results we can achieve with them. Tooth-colored restorations easily bond to the tooth structure, harden quickly, and produce a more visually pleasing result.
Dental Crowns
We may use our custom-made dental crowns to cover and protect a tooth that has had a large cavity, is worn, cracked, or weakened. Crowns are also typically used to cover a tooth after root canal therapy.
After removing the outer part of the tooth, we use our digital technology to scan your mouth and create a custom crown that is a close copy of your original tooth.
Dental Bridges
If dental implants are not possible, we might recommend a dental bridge if you need to replace several missing teeth. Dental bridges are typically made of anchoring crowns and artificial teeth, which are cemented in place.
At Barounis Dental, we work hard to offer you and your family the best possible general and preventive dentistry options and technologies. If you have been looking for a dentist that can treat all of your family’s dental needs, schedule an appointment at Barounis Dental in Foxborough, MA, today!
